My weight has become a national issue: Zarine Khan

Looking pretty in a tomato red, one-shoulder sexy short tunic, the monsoon in Mumbai is a welcome change for actress Zarine Khan. More so, as this time around, appreciation galore has been pouring with the rain. Her item number Character Dheela with Salman Khan in Ready has been well received.

A beaming Zarine says, "I'm loving the attention. I was written off after my debut in Veer. Now, steadily, the perception is changing. Yet, people aren't always noticing my acting skills. My weight has become a national issue. Even on the Internet, I see that my weight is a point of constant discussions. And I fail to understand why. Aren't Indian women known for being voluptuous. Indian men don't even like thin women, so why is everyone trying to look like ramp models in the west? Where is our uniqueness and individuality then," she asks. We agree.

Shooting for Housefull 2 and a film opposite Vikram down south in her kitty, Zarine's raring to go. Success spells a lot of hard work and she's ready to slog. Her heated run-ins with Sonakshi Sinha and Asin over Salman Khan is a thing of grapevine legend. She clarifies, "I don't come from an influential family. So, there's no-one who speaks on my behalf. But whenever I meet up with Sonakshi or Asin, we laugh it off. I never get back or speak up on what's being written about me. I consider these rumours a part of the celebrity status," she adds sensibly.

Living in a city, which never sleeps, aamchi Mumbai is home to Zarine. With a handful of close friends, she makes sure she has her share of fun. "Monsoon always reminds me of my childhood days. And I would like to dance around with an umbrella as if no one's watching and then go all naughty and get dirty in the mud," she concludes with a dimpled smile.

Mardar 2

Bollywood cancels big events following Mumbai blasts

Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani were ready with the first look of " Don 2: The Chase Continues" and Mahesh Bhatt was set to celebrate the success of " Murder 2" Wednesday evening, but the filmmakers cancelled their plans following three bomb blasts in Mumbai, which killed over 20 people.

The launch of the first look of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer "Don 2" was to be held 7.45 p.m. onwards at Cinemax, Andheri West, while the success party for Mohit Suri's directorial "Murder 2" was scheduled for 9 p.m. at the J.W. Marriot hotel in Juhu.

The first blast took place at Zaveri Bazar at 6.59 p.m, followed by a second blast at Opera House at 7.05 p.m, and the final explosion took place at Dadar West at 7.17 p.m., causing panic and chaos in the city.

The incessant rains added to the dilemma of city dwellers.

However, a few print and electronic journalists had already gathered at Cinemax, Andheri West to catch a glimpse of "Don 2", one of the most awaited movies this year.

Producer Ritesh Sidhwani was there too, but he approached the mediapersons, and said: "Due to the blast, we have decided to call off the event."

No further date for the event has been issued as yet.

The "Murder 2" success party, which was expected to be attended by lead pair Emraan Hashmi and Jacqueline Fernandes, apart from director Mohit Suri, other crew members and celebrities from the film industry, was also cancelled as the news of the blasts flashed everywhere, and a high alert was issued.

In New Delhi, Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai requested officials of the French government to postpone an award ceremony where she was supposed to be honoured with a "Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters".

However, Aishwarya appeared before the media along with her actor-husband Abhishek Bachchan and observed a minute-long silence mourning the death of the people in the blasts.

Will pregnancy affect Aishwarya Rai's career?

On October 31, 2009, two days before she turned 36, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan said, "Being pregnant is not something one can conceal. When I am pregnant, the world will know. This is not the news that one can hide." She laughed and added, "When I was on the Oprah Winfrey show, I even told her that every time there is even a bump, it is assumed that I'm with child."

Around 10.15 pm on June 21, 2011, an ecstatic Amitabh Bachchan confirmed the news of his daughter-in-law's pregnancy when he tweeted, "News News News!!! I am going to become grandfather. Aishwarya is expecting. So happy and thrilled!!!"

Since the Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai marriage on April 20, 2007, there has been constant speculation about the former Miss World's pregnancy. Now that it is confirmed that Ash will soon be a mum, the grapevine can rest easy. A test was reportedly done to determine that she was with child at the Seven Hills Hospital in aMumbai suburb. And soon after the pregnancy was confirmed, the Bachchans were flooded with congratulatory messages from friends, well-wishers and fans on social networking sites.

Now the next big question is: 'what happens to Ash's films; Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine and Raj Kumar Santoshi's Ladies and Gentleman?'

A source says, "Ash will definitely complete Madhur's film."TOI learnt that Madhur has barely finished six days shooting with Ash. And his film is not about to completed in a hurry. We also hear from unit hands that Ash has put on weight (as is natural in pregnancy). It is now to be seen whether Heroine gets completed on schedule or whether it will be deferred, till Ash returns to the movies after motherhood.

As for Ladies and Gentleman, a romantic comedy with Abhishek and Aishwarya that was closed at a reported 28 crores and meant to go on the floors in October 2011, the heroine of the film will obviously change.

Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan released a statement saying, "Jaya and I are delighted at the news. We wish to thank all our friends and well wishers for their affection and seek your blessings and love in the coming days."

Shilpa Shetty's food firm loses steam

Shilpa Shetty's international food company is in the doldrums. The group managing the business has filed for bankruptcy.

In August 2009, the actress and husband Raj Kundra announced a 33 per cent stake in the company. The couple invested close to 6 million pounds and had plans of opening casual dining and shopping mall dining formats in Dubai and Jordan next year. The actress-entrepreneur had expressed her intent of packaging and serving authentic gourmet meals, chutneys and pickles.

A source from London notes, "The group that runs her take away and restaurant business was already rescued once after going through a financial crisis. When she invested a huge sum in the group, the prospects seemed brighter. For the past two years however, things haven't looked so rosy. Apart from not-so-positive reviews from the press (Giles Coren is horrified at the changed menu at curry chain Bombay Bicycle Club after it was taken over by Bollywood celebrity Shilpa Shetty – www.thetimes.co.uk), the establishment has also had to deal with monetary issues like debts and loan approvals." The local press reports that the organisation has 264 employees working across 17 stores and takeaway sites, serving modern Indian cuisine. Their future is now uncertain.

Shilpa, who is in London, says, I exited the company in December 2010, so it does not affect me. I am working on something bigger and better.

Aishwarya's pregnancy won't affect Heroine

Madhur Bhandarkar started shooting for Heroine on June 8, 2011 with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan playing the female lead.

The actress was asked to gain weight for the film and that she did. However, her public appearances gave rise to speculations that the Bachchan bahu might be pregnant. Though Ash had rubbished the reports, her much exited father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan on Tuesday night announced to the world that Abhi and Ash are soon expecting a visit from the stork.

But the actress has no time to celebrate the joy as she is on an action packed start-to-finish schedule for Madhur's Heroine. However, the ace filmmaker plans to wrap up the film's shoot in 45 days, thereby giving Ash the time to be with her family, enjoy getting pampered as takes a step forward each day to becoming a mother.

Amidst all this, will the film's promotions or its success at the box office be affected is a crucial question. But Madhur Bhandarkar and his team see no need to push the panic button. A source revealed, "Madhur is not worried about Heroine's promotions or how Ash's pregnancy will affect the film's success. We shouldn't forget that Ash is a popular and successful actress and her getting married didn't affect her fan following. She enjoys a loyal fan following and it will not be affected by her becoming a mom."

The source also revealed that Madhur is looking to release the film around November this year and the promotional activities will be planned to suit Ash. For sure, the soon-to-be mom will be pampered by not just her family but her directors and co-stars too on the sets.
